My painting and drawing practice is focused on place; a means of detangling the randomness of memory and finding balance between pragmatic ways of seeing as well as narrative, symbolism, and abstraction. I start with my own collection of photographs, sketches, and experiences, repeatedly flipping through an archive of inconsequential moments; hyper aware that each location is influenced by subtle familiar signals. While meditating on landscape, I see formal elements of painting and forage through memories to find that thing before it is forgotten. Landscape transforms from tangible subject into wordless thought. This drifting to and from the subject is the respite within the confusion and desire to recreate the memory. What is painted ultimately reveals more about the present than the past.
